The Fisherman’s Bastion was built in the Neo-Romanesque style between 1895 and 1902 on the site of the old Buda Castle walls, following plans by Frigyes Schulek, who was also responsible for rebuilding Matthias Church. Its name recalls the medieval guild of fishermen who defended this section of the castle walls. In 1947–48, Schulek’s son, János Schulek, led the restoration of the complex after it was damaged during the Second World War. Since 1987, it has formed part of Budapest’s World Heritage Site as part of the Buda Castle District.
