St Stephen’s Basilica

In the 18th century, the site of today’s basilica was occupied by the Hetz Theatre, which hosted animal fights. János Zitterbarth, a wealthy resident of the newly developed Lipótváros district, soon had a small temporary church built here. In 1817, the Lipótváros parish was established with around one thousand members, creating the need for the district to have its own substantial parish church.
